College Staff Member and Keen Fundraiser Hosts First Luncheon Since Pandemic Started

A Coleg Llandrillo staff member is “thoroughly delighted” after successfully organising the first fundraising luncheon in aid of her local NSPCC branch since the start of the pandemic.

Sharon Shaw, who works within the college’s Adult Community Learning directorate, is a dedicated fundraiser and committee member of the NSPCC, and has been hosting the annual festive luncheon at the college’s Rhos-on-Sea campus for nearly 20 years.

This year, despite COVID-19 restrictions, it was a sell-out, with the 55 diners raising £700 in a matter of hours. It was also one of the first major events to be held in the college’s award-winning Orme View Restaurant since COVID-19 struck.

Sharon said: “We always appreciate the support that the college gives us, and our guests always comment very favourably on both the luncheon served, and on the service provided by the students. It is a great way to introduce the community to Coleg Llandrillo and many guests return to attend the restaurant’s Christmas lunches. It is a great opportunity for the students and all the hard-working staff to showcase what they can do.

“It was an important milestone for us as a charity. All of our fundraising stopped because of the pandemic and we went from raising thousands each year to just £80 from donations. Hopefully this will be the first of many more fundraising events held for this worthwhile charity.”

Deborah Wilkes, Food & Beverage service instructor at Coleg Llandrillo, said: “It is always a delight to welcome the NSPCC team. We are very proud to host this event at the Orme View Restaurant. Sharon is an extremely organised and hard-working individual who is passionate about her charity. We wish them every success with all their future events.”
