Engineering students gaining real-world experience over half-term

Good luck to learners on the Level 3 Enhanced General Engineering course at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor who are heading out for their second work placements of the year

Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor engineering students are venturing into the world of work during the half-term holiday.

Learners on the BTEC Level 3 Enhanced General Engineering course are heading on their second work placements of the academic year.

As part of their course, the students at the Pwllheli and Dolgellau campuses are required to gain 20 days of engineering work experience.

Emlyn Evans, engineering lecturer at the Pwllheli and Dolgellau campuses, said: “Next week we have the second session of work placements with 14 students venturing out into the world of work with various companies in the local area. Further dates are planned in April and May 2024.”

The students will be gaining real-world engineering experience with companies including Trawsfynydd Power Station, Rehau Blaenau Ffestiniog, Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway, Zip World, South Caernarfon Creameries, Pace Fire & Security, Bridge Garage Pwllheli, First Hydro Llanberis and Hochtief National Grid Dwyryd Estuary project.

Emlyn added: “The staff at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor would like to thank those companies who have accepted the learners on work experience during this week.

“We hope Osian, Liam, Celt, Jac R, Evan, George, Moses, Jack T, Jac F, Guto, Morus, Math, Cai and Isabella enjoy the experience that has been organised for them by the employers.

“The Enhanced Engineering course is providing our students with general engineering skills that will equip them for work in a wide variety of disciplines.

“Our past students have gone on to higher apprenticeships with companies such as Rolls Royce, Ryanair Maintenance, North Wales Trunk Road Agency and Rehau Ltd. Others have gone on to study civil, mechanical, electrical and motorsport engineering at universities in Wales and England.”

Any companies who would like to be part of future work placements, please contact Emlyn Evans via email: evans12e@gllm.ac.uk
