Ex-College Marine Student Starting Navy Officer Cadetship after Harbour Apprenticeship
A Colwyn Bay student has begun his Engineering Officer cadetship with the Merchant Navy after successfully juggling work experience duties at Conwy Harbour with his Marine Engineering studies at Coleg Llandrillo.
18-year-old Freddie Foulkes - who studied as an apprentice on the full-time Level 3 Marine Engineering course at the college’s Rhos-on-Sea campus - has spent the last 12 months working alongside the Harbour Master and harbour staff.
Every year, Conwy County Borough Council’s harbour office offers practical work experience to a small number of students enrolled on Coleg Llandrillo’s Marine Engineering courses, along with paid seasonal work.
Freddie has gained a wide range of valuable skills needed for the maritime sector, and has now joined the ranks of former Coleg Llandrillo Marine Engineering students who have gone on to varied and rewarding careers around the globe within the nautical industry.
Freddie said: “The experience I gained at Conwy Harbour was invaluable and it set me on the road to fulfilling my ambition of qualifying as a marine engineer. Every day working at the harbour provided me with a different challenge…working in all weathers. The most exciting experience was when we worked with the fire brigade, fire-fighting a boat fire in the harbour.”
Harbour Master Matthew Forbes said: “Freddie is the sixth student to start a Merchant Navy cadetship having worked at the harbour. We’re very proud of his success and our other trainees who have gone on to professional maritime careers. The first student who completed a placement has now qualified as a Third Officer. Other students have gone on to work on cruise ships, Trinity House vessels maintaining navigation buoys, cable laying ships, a tall ship and bulk carriers.”
