Grŵp Llandrillo Menai Awards Contract for ‘State of the Art’ Rhyl Engineering & Renewable Technologies Centre

Grŵp Llandrillo Menai has awarded the contract for the next stage of strategic development on their Rhyl Campus to long-established North Wales building firm WYNNE Construction. This major £12m overall project will include a wide range of cutting edge engineering training facilities - integrating mechanical, electrical and IT software engineering.

The new 3-floor 2,886 m2 facility will be packed with well-over £2m worth of the very latest in highly specialised training equipment: from CAD computer design suites, through 3-D prototyping machines, to computer-controlled large industrial scale metal-cutting CNC machines.

A stand-out feature of the building will be a 3-floor-high industrial scale Wind Turbine servicing and maintenance hall, which will directly support the Student & Apprentices Training partnership between the College and key employer RWE, Wales’ largest power producer and number one renewable energy generator.

This major new Wind Turbine related skills training facility is an up-graded new home for Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s already UK Nationally recognised “International Centre for Wind Turbine Technologies” (which will move from Rhos-on-Sea to Rhyl).

Simon Moreton, Commercial Director at Wynne Construction said:

“It is great news that Grŵp Llandrillo Menai are expanding their built environment provision at Rhyl Campus, and we are really pleased to have secured this contract following on from our success with the delivery of previous phases.”

He added: “The scheme complements our current work in Rhyl, with the building of the Queens Market facility together with healthcare projects in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and on Brighton Road, maximising on the economic benefits, skills and training opportunities for both GLLM students and local supply chain partners. With the project due to start this month, we are looking forward to inviting local schools and the college for site visits and potential work experience placements.”

Wyn Thomas, Grŵp Llandrillo’s Director of Strategic Projects said: “We are very proud that once again a North Wales Company has won this latest Contract through our competitive framework. It means our Capital Projects are again employing sub-Contractors across North Wales, strengthening the Regional economy and securing and creating Welsh jobs. This will be a “BREEAM Excellent” standard building, with a Net-Zero annual energy usage. We expect completion by late 2023, so that teaching can start in early 2024.

Lawrence Wood, Coleg Llandrillo Principal said:

“This new development will significantly enhance our Coleg Llandrillo campus in Rhyl. It will provide learners in the region the ability to learn and train on the latest technology in a state-of-the-art learning environment, this will stand them in good stead to pursue well-paid careers in industries such as power generation, engineering and advanced manufacturing.

My vision for this centre is that it operates in partnership with industry providing people with the skills required to support economic growth and innovation in the sector across North Wales.”

RWE Renewables John McKenzie said,

“It is great news that Grŵp Llandrillo Menai is developing its Rhyl Campus.

The site is a major training hub for us and is key to developing our apprentices and staff. Our

the relationship with the college is outstanding and it plays a strategic role for both RWE and across the wider renewable energy sector, enhancing skills in what is a vital business growth area.

The college already sets a high standard and has helped a number of individuals to not only develop but to surpass their own expectations, and who are now impacting and improving the renewable energy sector. This hopefully will build on what is already a great foundation.”
