Pwllheli A-Level Students Visit Glan-llyn

A-level Welsh students from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor's Pwllheli campus recently got the opportunity to visit Glan-llyn: one of the leading outdoor education centres in Wales.

The group of students had three full days at the centre, attending a wide range of lectures on a variety of subjects from tutors at the Department of Welsh at Bangor University, and other notable contributors. The first-year college learners got the opportunity to meet Huw Garmon, lead actor in the film Hedd Wyn, and also hear the crew's on-set stories during filming.

The second-year group enjoyed Menna Baines' session on 'Un Nos Ola Leuad', and the discussion of the autobiographical elements of the author Caradog Prichard in the novel.

One first-year student commented: "It's been nice to have lectures from experts, hear the reaction to poems from some of the poets themselves, and also enjoy socialising and other activities.”

They took part in a range of outdoor and indoor activities, including a visit to the home of the poet Hedd Wyn at Yr Ysgwrn, Trawsfynydd.

Gruffydd Rhys Davies, A-level Welsh tutor at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor's Pwllheli campus, said: "It was a delight to take our students to Glan-llyn. Offering these kinds of experiences to our students is central to the work and mission of the college. Seeing our students enjoy and learn from some of the leading scholars in their field is heart-warming, especially after some difficult years. Thank you to Bangor University for this great opportunity.”

They had three full days of lectures on various subjects of the A level course from lecturers from the Department of Welsh, Bangor University as well as other contributors. It was a very valuable experience for the first year crew to meet Huw Garmon, the lead actor in the film, Hedd Wyn, and to hear the crew's stories and priorities while filming.

The second year group enjoyed Menna Baines' session on Un Nos Ola Leuad, and the discussion of the autobiographical elements of the author, Caradog Prichard, in the novel. This is what some of the first year girls had to say about the visit.

"It's been nice to have lectures from experts and some of the poets themselves and to hear their reaction to the poems; and also socialising and enjoying the activities. ”

They had fun competing in the Talwrn, and taking part in outdoor and indoor activities, but there were plenty of complaints about the temperature of Llyn Tegid! We also visited the home of the poet Hedd Wyn at Yr Ysgwrn, Trawsfynydd.

Gruffydd Rhys Davies, A level Welsh tutor at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor Pwllheli, said.

"It was a privilege to take our students to Glan-llyn, offering these kinds of experiences to our students is central to the work and mission of the College. Seeing our students enjoy and learn from some of the leading scholars in their field is heartwarming, especially after nearly two difficult years. Thank you to Bangor University for this great opportunity ”
