Students Take Part in Royal Navy Team-building Event

Students from Coleg Llandrillo’s Public Services department attended a team-building day with representatives from the Royal Navy, where they took part in a range of practical and classroom-based exercises.

The aim of the event was to demonstrate to students how excellent communication is the cornerstone for the management and overall effectiveness of any situation.

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Protective Services students had to work as a team, regularly discussing, communicating and prioritising, in order to successfully complete the challenges. The transferable skills learnt on the day can be applied to any job or career.

The Protective Services course explores various aspects of the uniformed public services, challenging physical and mental ability, and is designed to prepare for employment in the armed forces, police, ambulance service, fire service, prison service and other community and emergency service-related organisations.

The visitors to the Rhos-on-Sea campus spoke about the range of operational roles within the Royal Navy, and also the career opportunities available.

They delivered two practical sessions consisting of team-building exercises and leadership scenarios, which challenged every learner.

One of the scenarios was a 'ski walk', where teams of four students - who were on the same set of skis - had to rely on their individual leaders to use his or her own leadership skills in an attempt to lead the group to victory.

Ian Marshall, Level 3 Protective Services course coordinator, said: "The learners and staff had an excellent day with the Royal Navy team. Students were kept entertained with several practical leadership and teamwork scenarios which will transfer to their teamwork and leadership modules. Andy and Edmund provided the students with a realistic view of what the Royal Navy is really about, through real-life stories and very well-constructed presentations.”

Student feedback on the day was extremely positive: “It was very educational and fun too”, “very interesting and insightful”, “interesting topics”, and “there was a lot to take away from the sessions”.
