Busnes@LlandrilloMenai Babcock Partnership Recognised in National Finals

A strategic partnership between specialist work-based learning training provider Busnes@LlandrilloMenai and Babcock International Group (Babcock) has been recognised at the Welsh Government’s Apprenticeship Awards Wales held in Newport.

Babcock was shortlisted for Macro Employer Award for a strategic partnership that has utilised the Welsh Government’s Apprenticeship programme to train and develop 171 aeronautical engineers so far, with a further 29 apprentices currently working to complete their apprenticeship.

Since the partnership launched in 2016, students that have completed their level 3 Aeronautical Engineering qualifications with Grŵp Llandrillo Menai can apply for a converted place on Babcock’s Aeronautical Engineering Apprenticeship Programme. Each year, the company recruits between 6 – 8 aeronautical Engineering apprentices. Competition is fierce and interviewing for the 2024-25 cohort is currently underway.

Of the engineers who completed the Aeronautical Engineering Apprenticeship Programme the vast majority have gone on to a career at Babcock. Many play a role in training the next generation of fighter pilots by maintaining the Hawk T2 jets that fly at RAF Valley, while others have developed their careers within Babcock by taking advantage of worldwide opportunities and promotions.

Gwenllian Roberts, Executive Director - Commercial Development explains:

“We are really proud of the relationship that we’ve built with Babcock, and I wish to congratulate the whole team on making it through to the final of the Welsh Government’s Apprenticeship Awards Wales.

“The strategic partnership with Babcock is a great example of what can be done when the education and the private sector work together to deliver skills that will truly benefit the region, people and the economy.

“Busnes@LlandrilloMenai’s purpose is to work with businesses across North Wales to develop long-term partnerships that will deliver positive outcomes for places, people, the economy and business - partnerships that deliver jobs and prosperity such as this partnership with Babcock.”

Chloe Barker, Managing Director of Babcock’s UK Aviation business, added:

“We’re extremely proud of the partnership we’ve built with Busnes@LlandrilloMenai to deliver this award-winning apprenticeship programme.

“Babcock is committed to contributing to the communities in which it operates, and this programme provides a route for young people in Anglesey to continue their education, while building a future career path.

“We look forward to growing our partnership and continuing to support the local community now and into the future.”
