Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor Art Lecturer in Race for National Award

An Arts lecturer based at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor’s Pwllheli campus has been nominated for the ‘Hearts for the Arts’ national award.

‘Hearts of the Arts’ is run by the National Arts Campaign, the charity working to promote more community, visual art throughout the country.

A-level tutor Ffion Gwyn was nominated for her involvement in a range of creative and innovative projects, together with contributing to the well-being of the Criccieth community during the pandemic.

Ffion worked on various creative projects within the town in conjunction with some of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor’s art students: the Rainbow Bridge and friendship benches, whilst also reminiscing about old legends from the area.

The ‘Hearts for the Arts’ competition adjudicators said: “Ffion's passion for the arts is evident. She devotes her time and energy to the cause, showing leadership and an understanding of the power and impact of arts and culture on communities.

"It is clear from Ffion's nomination that she has been extremely active in using culture and the arts to bring people together."

Ffion Gwyn said: "It is a pleasure and an honor to be shortlisted for this award. It is a tribute to the incredible work and commitment of members of our community, from young to old, on so many memorable projects. We live in an unprecedented time and it is great to be able to reach out through our various creative ventures to include hundreds in our bilingual community. These have boosted the well-being of us all.”

Bryn Hughes-Parry, assistant principal of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, said: "We are extremely proud of Ffion, especially in the way that she offers college students the experience of working with the community on various art projects. This is further proof to anyone interested in coming here to study with us, that our approach to education is holistic, and offers our students a wide, diverse range of experiences.”
