Glynllifon hosts forestry careers fair for nearly 100 children
Prospective students from across North Wales learned about careers including tree planting, tree felling, machine operation and conservation
Coleg Glynllifon hosted a Royal Forestry Society careers fair attended by nearly 100 school children from across North Wales.
The aim of the day at the land-based education campus was to show the range of different career paths within forestry.
This includes tree planting, scientific (looking and testing for diseases), tree felling, machine operation, conservation and much more.
Forestry lecturer Jeff Jones said: “Schools all over North Wales were invited and on the day we had just under 100 school children from across the region.
“Children were able to talk to industry in the marketplace, with organisations such as Kronospan in Chirk and Tilhill forestry to name a few.
“Other workshops included basic mensuration (measuring the volume of timber) with Bangor University, harvester simulator operation with land-based training specialists Mwmac, and a look at tree-cutting and the college facilities.”
The careers fair was attended by students from Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern, Ysgol Glan Y Môr in Pwllheli, Ysgol Botwnnog in Pen Llŷn, Ysgol Hafod Lon in Penrhyndeudraeth, and Ysgol Clywedog in Wrexham.
Becky Wilkinson, Royal Forestry Society learning and outreach manager, said: “Huge thanks to Coleg Glynllifon for hosting the day and to all the organisations who came along to help inspire the next generation of foresters and arborists.
“Our sector is growing rapidly and there are so many opportunities for a rewarding career.”
Glynllifon is a land-based education campus with residential facilities, situated on the Glynllifon Estate near Caernarfon. The Glynllifon farm, including the woodland, extends to 300 hectares, and is a great environment for studying countryside management and agricultural studies.
