RAF Fighter jet engine gifted to college
A jet engine has been delivered to Coleg Menai’s Llangefni campus, thanks to the Ministry of Defence, RAF Valley, Babcock International and Rolls Royce.
The jet engine will be utilised by Aeronautical Engineering learners, who will now be able to practise their maintenance and repair skills on a real-life engine used in the RAF’s Hawk T1 fighter jets.
The Aeronautical Engineering course provides learners with the introductory skills and technical knowledge in preparation for work in a variety of aeronautical engineering roles, in both the Aircraft Service and Maintenance industries.
Damian Woodford, Programme Area Manager for Engineering at Coleg Menai, explained: “We’re extremely grateful to the Ministry of Defence for their generous support. Taking delivery of the Rolls-Royce Adour engine will mean that our students will get first-hand experience of working on a real life piece of equipment, used by the Armed Forces at the moment."
Llifon Jones, Aeronautical Engineering Lecturer at Coleg Menai, added: “The learners will gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Rolls-Royce Adour engine, and will be able to apply that understanding and experience when they apply for work, apprenticeships or go into higher education."
